Houston 7/2 – 7/6

The Hubbards

We spent the majority of our time with the best family in Texas: the Hubbards. The first night we got there they took us to a real Texas BBQ where we stuffed our faces. It was just the beginning to an amazing Texas experience. The weather was hot and humid but better than we had it the last time we visited Texas in February of 2015. Sunday we slept in and went to church with the Hubbards in the afternoon. Scott and Teresa Hubbard are great family friends from California who moved to Texas for work. They are practically considered family we are so close.

4th of July

Monday was 4th of July so we wanted to buy fireworks. We bought mortars, sparklers, Roman candles, bottle rockets, and more. We started the day with the ward pancake breakfast, reminding us of our California 4th of July traditions. There was surprisingly a good turnout here in Texas and the food was delicious. Later we went swimming and the water was practically the same temperature as the air. That was Alyssa’s favorite because she doesn’t enjoy swimming in cold water. Fireworks were great, Scott had some mortars that probably had the biggest bang in the neighborhood. It was a fantastic Texas 4th of July.

Houston,the eagle has landed!

Tuesday we got to go to NASA and see the famous control center that worked with the Apollo missions. We took a tram tour at the space center that showed the control center and the astronaut training facility. Everything looked pretty advanced in technologies and quite interesting. They had a rocket inside one of the buildings that was practically as long as a football field, it was used for one of the Apollo missions, most of the space missions involving humans going into space were controlled by the Houston Space center. Aside from the rockets and command center they have cool exhibits including being able to touch a rock from the moon, an airplane that transported the space shuttle and even some Mythbusters artifacts from the show. It was all pretty amazing to see especially because I enjoy space and air things.

Astros vs Mariners

Our losing streak is over! Of course it had to be the Astros because we were in Houston. We were quite nervous about going to this game because we thought it was going to be in the sun and about 95 degrees as that was the temperature it was before we entered the stadium. Luckily for us, they had a roof closed up and the air conditioner blasting. On top of that, we had great first level seats in the the right field area. There were a few home runs this game and on each Astros home run there were fireworks as well as the train high in the window that moves about 100 feet across. We later found out there was a train conductor that moves it on each home run. It’s a real train they have in this stadium, totally awesome.

Houston Temple

Our last day in Houston we went with Scott and Terri to the Houston temple and did a session while we got to see another member go for the first time. The temple was beautiful, and the neighborhood around it is of great wealth, I thought some Coto de Caza homes were big, these homes were about twice to three times the size of those homes.  After the temple we finally made it to Costco and did some shopping and then it was time to make our way to The Big Easy, New Orleans.
