Mississippi
Although we were having a blast in New Orleans, we had to move on. We were scheduled to pick up my brothers who were flying into the Orlando airport the next day and then we were going to join my parents for a Walt Disney World adventure. Our short venture in Mississippi consisted of lunch at a charming little stand called the Snak Shack in Gulfport, MS. We ordered fried catfish with hush puppies and coleslaw. It was pretty tasty, but more than the food, we enjoyed how delightful the waitress was. She was so excited to see that we had come all the way from CA and had heard about their little stand (thanks to Google recommendations). Though brief, we sure did enjoy Mississippi.
Alabama
When you cross over the Mobile Bay on the I-10 in Alabama you find yourself in Spanish Fort. We took the very first exit after the bridge and found a boardwalk that extended over marsh and swamp called Gator Alley (thanks Scott Hubbard for the recommendation). We walked up and down the boardwalk briefly, though we didn’t go very far. Apparently there are often alligators that can be seen from the path (or on the path).
We visited the Bass Pro Shop in Spanish Fort that contains a full-size restaurant. It wasn’t time for dinner yet so instead we just sat at the bar to get a soda and an order of fried alligator. We weren’t sure what to expect as neither Skylar nor I have eaten alligator before but it was delicious. It tasted like chicken or pork, and they served it with a yummy pepper jack cream cheese sauce (that they had dyed green for effect).
Next, we continued onto Florida.
